You may remember Dustin from a few months back. He was undergoing heartworm treatment--now that he's fully recovered, we're looking for just the right forever home for him. His vet does want him to have another heartworm test in a few months just to make sure he's seen the last of those pesky worms.

Dustin was about two years old when he came to GRRMF after living in the backyard with an aggressive German Shepard. Dustin was skinny at 48 pounds and afraid of everything; he was not so sure about living indoors, either. Dustin would charge out the door and then he was afraid to come back in. Now, though, he's a healthy 69 pounds and he's learned that indoor living is a good thing. Because of his tendancy to sometimes bolt out the door, we still think he'd do best in a home without children.

Dustin is housebroken and has a head start on learning a few commands, like sit, come and stay, but we will require that Dustin's new family take him to obedience classes. Dustin would benefit from learning in an environment with other dogs, and regular training classes will also help him bond to his new owner. Like the typical golden retriever, Dustin has an enormous willingness to please his people so he should be a star pupil.Training will also give him the confidence he needs to be an excellent companion.

Dustin was restricted from play during heartworm treatment, but is finally learning that toys are fun . He is so proud of himself when he gets a ball and he prances around shaking it back and forth. He seems to want to play with the other dogs, but is still figuring out how to do that. He likes to explore the yard, but now he happily comes back inside when called.

You will not find a more affectionate boy; Dustin loves affection, especially hugs and kisses. He's a typical in-your-face golden who loves attention. He can be demanding, but after so much neglect, we understand.

Dustin enjoys the comforts of living IN the house now.

As a young dog this happy guy still has tons of energy that needs good management and direction but its that kind of energy that can be the most fun for the right people. In spite of a “teenager’s” energy Dustin is a little shy and apprehensive in certain situations. Training and socialization will help him overcome his insecurities and help make him a model citizen.
