Lucky has reached several milestones since we last updated her web page! First, she is now 1 year old, so she had a birthday at the end of July. And ... drum roll please! ... As you can see from the picture, Lucky has learned the "SIT" command - this was a big step for her, because with her missing front leg, "sit" doesn't come naturally to her. She usually is either standing or lying down. Her foster mom was up to the challenge, and through lots of positive reinforcement and treats, Lucky now knows this command - good girl, Lucky!

Lucky also is now completely potty trained and no longer needs to be crated when her humans are away. She doesn't get into things she shouldn't, either. Lucky loved her foster brother Baron, who was just adopted. She misses her play buddy, and we're hoping to find Lucky her very own forever play buddy very soon! We aren't sure why someone hasn't snapped up this cutie pie yet - could it be that some people see her missing leg as a "disability"? Lucky doesn't! She runs and jumps and plays just like any other dog. Three legs is all she's ever known, so no need to feel sorry for Lucky - she is happy as can be; in fact, her name should be Sunshine because that is what she is - like a bright ray of sunshine on a cloudy day!

Lucky

Well, the verdict is in! If this little girl were any cuter, she'd be illegal! Lucky spent a recent weekend on her foster folks' boat. She made herself right at home, going up and down the cabin stairs with ease and charming and snuggling with everyone who visited the boat. She was a big hit, and we're very proud of how well behaved she was in such small quarters. Lucky is a lucky girl, for sure - but the luckiest one will be the person who takes her home. She is one very special girl.

This little pocket golden - just 40 lbs! - is charming everyone she meets! Not only is she petite, but she is just as cute and good-natured as they come. With her bubbly personality, she is truly irresistable. She gets along fabulously with everyone, her potty training is coming along great and she has learned to swim, too! Mostly, she likes to sit on the steps and put her head under the water making bubbles and splashes. She's just a hoot to watch. And if you're thinking that having 3 legs means she has a disability - think again! This girl is one of the fastest sprinters we've seen in a while! She'll dart after a tennis ball and keep up with her 80-lb ballnut foster brother with no problem.

Lucky smiles for you

There may not be too many 3-legged agility or flyball champs out there, but we'd put our money on her any day - with her small size and well-honed muscles, she is a great athlete waiting to happen. When the tennis balls get put away, though, Lucky is cuddly and sweet. She will lie qu ietly and entertain herself with other toys, or she'll sit with you for belly rubs. She actually has learned to use her stump to maneuver toys and other things. It's great to see how much she has taught herself. What a wonderful companion she is going to make some lucky family!

At 10 months old, Lucky found herself at Animal Control. Her days were numbered, because even though she is a young and healthy golden retriever – and cute as a button to boot! – she has one “flaw.” She is missing a leg. The shelter staff loved Lucky’s personality and sweet disposition, and asked if GRRMF might be able to help. We did, and finally, Lucky had her “lucky day”!

Our veterinarian assessed the leg and feels she was likely born this way. Lucky doesn’t think she has a disability, and the missing leg doesn’t slow her down one bit. It is all she has known, so she compensates very well. She can run and jump and play just like a typical golden retriever – and in her foster home, she’s also learning to swim!

Lucky is one lucky golden retriever, to be sure. She’s extremely sweet and happy. She’s housebroken and for the most part well-behaved in the house, although she did take advantage of an opportunity to steal some bread off the kitchen counter when foster mom left the room. Well, Lucky is a puppy and shouldn’t be expected to be perfect – her foster folks are working with her on this, and they’re also being more careful about removing temptations to help Lucky stay on the right track.

Lucky will charm you with her great personality

Lucky loves to play with toys and other dogs of all ages and is fine with the resident cat in her foster home. She went to work with mom one day and had a great time charming all the people she met. She is a very social and personable girl – you just can’t help but love her bubbly personality.

Requirements for Lucky’s adoption:

  • Fenced yard, so she has room to run and play. Lucky is still a puppy and needs to burn off her puppy energy every day – remember, a tired puppy is a good puppy!

  • Obedience classes, so that she can learn all the basics and become a good canine citizen. This requirement will be included in the adoption contract, so whoever adopts Lucky must be willing and committed to taking her through at least basic obedience training.
  • An active family who can spend quality time with Lucky every single day – she needs that human interaction and is not yet of the age to be a “couch potato.”
  • A canine play buddy would be great, or at least regular opportunities to play and socialize with those of her own kind. Lucky is quite the social butterfly – even dogs who don’t particularly care for other dogs seem to like her

We’re looking for a special home for this very special little girl. Although her foster family would love to keep her, they realize that she deserves a chance to find a forever home of her own, where she’ll be loved for who she is and have every opportunity to grow into a shining golden star. We hope that some family out there realizes how special she is and how “lucky” they’d be to add her to their home.
